Cantilever Uprights

Uprights

Cantilever uprights are vertical columns bolted to horizontal bases, forming the backbone of the system. Available in single- or double-sided styles in heights of 96", 144", 192", and 240". Each upright includes precision-punched holes on 3" centers for adjustable arm positioning and is floor-anchored for maximum stability and OSHA compliance.

Cantilever Arms

Arms

Cantilever arms are the primary contact point for stored materials. Available in straight (flat, stable loads) or inclined (cylindrical materials — 20° pitch prevents forward roll-off). Adjustable on 3" centers, in lengths up to 60", rated 600–2,500 lbs per arm depending on length and gauge. Optional lips or stoppers available.

Brace Sets

Brace Set

Brace sets connect uprights and provide structural rigidity. Pattern selection depends on upright height: 2H-1X (96" height), 3H-1X (144" height), 4H-2X (192" height), and 5H-2X (240" height). High-strength steel with galvanized finish resists corrosion and prevents rack sway under medium- to heavy-duty loads.

Single vs Double Sided Cantilever Uprights

Single-Sided vs. Double-Sided Cantilever Uprights

Single-sided uprights are ideal for wall-mounted configurations — storage on one side only, conserving floor space and ideal for facilities with limited depth. Available in all standard heights with the same 3" hole spacing for arm adjustment.

Double-sided uprights allow storage on both sides simultaneously — maximizing storage density and accessibility when placed in open floor areas. Double-sided systems require aisle access on both sides for loading.

All uprights are floor-anchored for structural integrity (anchor bolts required, not included) and offered in heights of 96", 144", 192", and 240" with customizable base lengths for stability under load.

Cantilever Arms

Cantilever arms are the primary load-bearing element of any cantilever rack system. These horizontal supports are the direct contact point for stored materials — proper arm selection determines overall system strength, safety, and layout flexibility. From lumber and steel plate to piping and steel coil, choosing the right arm profile and length is critical for safe, efficient storage. Pallet Storage Solutions supplies cantilever arms in straight and inclined profiles, adjustable on 3" centers, in lengths up to 60" and capacities from 600 to 2,500 lbs per arm.

Various types of cantilever arms — straight, inclined, and hair pin keeper
Straight Arm for Cantilever Rack

Straight Arm

Ideal for stable, flat loads such as wood panels, steel sheets, crates, and furniture components.

Straight Arm for Cantilever Rack

Straight arms provide a level surface for flat, stable loads including wood panels, plywood sheets, steel flat stock, crates, and furniture components. The horizontal surface ensures materials do not shift or warp over time. Available in multiple lengths and gauges — select arm length so that load depth never exceeds arm length, and ensure at least two to four arms per load to prevent deflection. Standard pitch prevents deflection under heavy weight. Optional end stops and lips prevent forward slide-off.

Inclined Arm for Cantilever Rack

Inclined Arm

Designed for cylindrical or round objects like pipes, rolls, tubing, and conduits. 20° pitch prevents forward roll-off.

Inclined Arm for Cantilever Rack

Inclined arms are specifically engineered for cylindrical and round materials — pipes, steel tubing, conduit, PVC, rope coils, and rolled goods. The standard 20° pitch uses gravity to keep cylindrical items naturally secured against the upright column, preventing forward roll-off without additional restraints. Optional arm stoppers add extra security for high-value or hazardous cylindrical stock. Critical for OSHA compliance in pipe and round-material storage environments.

Hair Pin Keeper for Cantilever Arm

Hair Pin Keeper

Critical safety component that secures the arm to the upright — allows tool-free height adjustment.

Hair Pin Keeper for Cantilever Arm

The hair pin keeper is a critical safety component that locks the cantilever arm to the upright column, preventing arm dislodgment under load. This removable pin allows tool-free adjustment of arm height on 3" centers — reconfigure arm spacing without tools or disassembly. Compatible with all standard cantilever arms. OSHA requires that all cantilever arms be properly pinned before loading. Replacement pins are available individually from Pallet Storage Solutions — call 734-621-5052.

Brace Sets for Structural Stability

Cantilever brace sets are critical cross-members that connect uprights, ensuring horizontal stability and rigidity across the entire rack system. Pattern selection depends on upright height and load requirements. High-strength steel with galvanized finish resists corrosion. Proper brace selection prevents rack sway and ensures OSHA-compliant structural integrity in medium- to heavy-duty applications.

"5H-2X" Brace Pattern: For 240" uprights — five horizontal braces with two X-shaped reinforcements, brace lengths 35", 48", 48", 48", 48", 13". Maximum rigidity for large-scale cantilever rack systems with highest upright heights.

Designing a Cantilever Rack System

The key to a successful cantilever rack system is knowing the size, weight, and shape of your stored products — length, depth, height, and weight determine the number and configuration of arms, uprights, and braces needed.

Cantilever Rack System arm spacing and design diagram

Number and Spacing of Arms

Use at least two arms per load level if deflection is minimal — three or four arms if deflection is detected. Overhanging loads must not exceed half the spacing between uprights. More arms distribute load and reduce arm deflection.

Arm Length Selection

Load depth must never exceed arm length. Match arm length to product width for full support. Improperly short arms create point loads and can dramatically reduce rated arm capacity. Always verify arm length against maximum product depth.

Upright Height

Account for ceiling clearance, forklift operating height, overhead sprinkler clearance, and local building codes. Add base height, arm thickness, and 6" minimum vertical clearance per storage level to determine required upright height.

Arm and Upright Capacities

Divide total load per level by number of arms to get required arm capacity. Multiply arm capacity by total arms per upright side to get upright load requirement. Upright capacity must always exceed total arm capacity — never undersize the upright rating.

Brace Length

Brace length is the centerline spacing between uprights — critical to stability and load rating. Select the correct brace pattern (2H-1X, 3H-1X, 4H-2X, or 5H-2X) based on upright height and overall spacing. Never use mismatched brace patterns.

Warehouse Layout

Evaluate floor space, aisle requirements, and workflow to choose between single-sided or double-sided uprights. Single-sided suits wall-adjacent layouts. Double-sided maximizes storage density in open floor areas — requires forklift access on both sides.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cantilever Racks

What is a cantilever rack system?
A cantilever rack system is a structural storage system designed for long, bulky, and irregularly shaped materials — no front vertical columns means completely unobstructed frontal access. The three components are uprights (vertical columns, single- or double-sided, 96" to 240" heights), arms (horizontal supports, straight or inclined, adjustable on 3" centers, up to 60" length, 600–2,500 lbs per arm), and brace sets (cross-members for rigidity, in patterns 2H-1X through 5H-2X). Standard applications include lumber yards, steel service centers, pipe and tubing distributors, and furniture manufacturers. Contact Pallet Storage Solutions at 734-621-5052 for a free design consultation.
What types of materials are best suited for cantilever racking?
Cantilever racking is ideal for any material too long or irregularly shaped for standard pallet racking: dimensional lumber and plywood (straight arms); steel bar, flat stock, and structural steel (straight arms with end stops); steel pipe, round tubing, conduit, and PVC (inclined arms — 20° pitch uses gravity to prevent forward roll-off); furniture components including sofas, mattresses, and flat-pack furniture (straight arms); and rolled carpet, fabric rolls, and textile tubes (inclined or straight arms). Straight arms support flat, stable loads. Inclined arms are engineered specifically for cylindrical or round materials. Contact us at 734-621-5052 for arm type recommendations based on your specific materials.
Can cantilever racks be used outdoors?
Yes. Cantilever racks with galvanized steel finish are suitable for outdoor use — galvanizing resists corrosion in rain, humidity, and temperature cycling. Galvanized finish is standard for outdoor lumber yards, pipe storage yards, steel service center outdoor storage, and building materials dealers. Powder coat alone is not sufficient for long-term outdoor exposure — galvanized finish is strongly recommended. Outdoor installations require concrete anchor bolts (not included) to secure uprights. Contact Pallet Storage Solutions at 734-621-5052 for outdoor specifications and anchoring requirements.
How much weight can cantilever racks hold?
Cantilever rack weight capacity depends on arm length, arm type, gauge, and brace configuration. Individual arm capacities range from 600 to 2,500 lbs per arm — shorter arms with heavier gauge steel carry more weight. For system design: divide total load per level by number of arms to determine required arm capacity; multiply arm capacity by total arms per upright side to verify upright rating. Upright capacity must always exceed total arm load. Overhanging load must not exceed half the spacing between uprights. Contact Pallet Storage Solutions at 734-621-5052 for a customized capacity assessment for your specific materials and facility.
Can cantilever racks be customized for specific warehouse needs?
Yes. Customization options include: upright height (96", 144", 192", 240", or custom); single-sided or double-sided configuration; arm length (up to 60") and type (straight or inclined); arm height spacing on 3" centers; brace pattern (2H-1X, 3H-1X, 4H-2X, or 5H-2X); arm capacity rating by gauge selection; galvanized or powder-coated finish; end stops and lips; and accessories such as lumber dividers, pipe cradles, and safety straps.
