Designing a Cantilever Rack System
The key to a successful cantilever rack system is knowing the size, weight, and shape of your stored products — length, depth, height, and weight determine the number and configuration of arms, uprights, and braces needed.
Number and Spacing of Arms
Use at least two arms per load level if deflection is minimal — three or four arms if deflection is detected. Overhanging loads must not exceed half the spacing between uprights. More arms distribute load and reduce arm deflection.
Arm Length Selection
Load depth must never exceed arm length. Match arm length to product width for full support. Improperly short arms create point loads and can dramatically reduce rated arm capacity. Always verify arm length against maximum product depth.
Upright Height
Account for ceiling clearance, forklift operating height, overhead sprinkler clearance, and local building codes. Add base height, arm thickness, and 6" minimum vertical clearance per storage level to determine required upright height.
Arm and Upright Capacities
Divide total load per level by number of arms to get required arm capacity. Multiply arm capacity by total arms per upright side to get upright load requirement. Upright capacity must always exceed total arm capacity — never undersize the upright rating.
Brace Length
Brace length is the centerline spacing between uprights — critical to stability and load rating. Select the correct brace pattern (2H-1X, 3H-1X, 4H-2X, or 5H-2X) based on upright height and overall spacing. Never use mismatched brace patterns.
