What is Pallet Racking?

Pallet Racking in Warehouse

Pallet racking is a material handling storage system designed to hold palletized goods in warehouses, distribution centers, and industrial facilities. It maximizes vertical and horizontal space, allowing businesses to store more inventory efficiently.

Pallet racks are made up of uprights (frames) and beams that create multiple storage levels, making it easy for forklifts to load and retrieve pallets.

Understanding your pallet racking type is essential for safety, compatibility, and efficiency—especially when adding new components or replacing damaged parts. Learn more in our Pallet Rack Buying Guide.

Common & Interchangeable Styles: Teardrop

Old Style Teardrop Rack

Old Style Teardrop

The original and most common rack in North America. Upright frames feature teardrop-shaped slots (rounded at top, tapered at bottom). Beams lock into place with connector pins that slide into these slots.

New Style Teardrop Rack

New Style Teardrop

Developed by Interlake, with more rectangular and narrower upright holes. Uses riveted pins shaped like pointy teeth or tapered ovals. Pins and slots are typically spaced 2” or 4” apart.

Pro Tip: Old and new style teardrop racks are not always interchangeable. Always verify compatibility before ordering parts — see our Teardrop Pallet Rack section for details.

Why Proper Identification Matters

Safety

Proper identification ensures that beams and uprights are correctly matched to their load capacities, preventing structural failures. Using incompatible or incorrectly rated components can lead to rack collapses, posing significant risks to warehouse personnel and inventory.

Compatibility

Each pallet rack style has unique connection mechanisms, such as teardrop or keystone slots. Identifying your system ensures that replacement parts or expansions fit seamlessly, avoiding installation issues or weakened structures due to mismatched components.

Efficiency

Knowing your rack type streamlines maintenance and upgrades, reducing operational downtime. Accurate identification allows for quick sourcing of compatible parts, minimizing delays in repairs and ensuring smooth warehouse operations.

Longevity

Using the correct components extends the lifespan of your racking system by ensuring optimal load distribution and structural integrity. Proper identification prevents wear and tear from incompatible parts, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
